Rapid Bay: The Capital That Almost Was

After picking up my 4WD from RedSands Campers and stocking up on plenty of food and drinks, I hit the road and made tracks for Rapid Bay. There’s something therapeutic about that first night in the rooftop camper; I spent the evening getting everything organized and dialing in the setup just the way I like it.

Stepping out onto the shore, it’s wild to think that this quiet, secluded spot was nearly the heart of South Australia. Back on September 8, 1836, Colonel William Light made his first mainland landfall right here, naming the bay after his ship, the Rapid.

For a brief moment in history, Rapid Bay was actually at the top of the list for the new colony’s capital! Once Light discovered the Adelaide Plains, though, this spot faded into a beautiful, quiet obscurity—which, honestly, is part of its magic today. It’s the perfect place to find some peace before the next leg of the journey.

Next stop: I’m boarding a ferry tomorrow morning… stay tuned to see where I’m heading next!
