Kangaroo Island: The Sleepy Residents of Seal Bay

The sun has risen on my final day on Kangaroo Island, and I couldn’t leave without paying a visit to the locals at Seal Bay.

This stretch of coastline is home to a massive colony of around 1,000 Australian sea lions, and they are fascinating to watch. I learned some pretty wild facts while I was there: these guys spend two to three days straight out at sea hunting for food, and they don’t sleep a wink the entire time! So, when you see them scattered across the sand like oversized logs, they’re not just being lazy—they’re deep in recovery mode from the sheer exhaustion of foraging in the Southern Ocean. Watching them snooze on the beach, you really get a sense of the “work hard, rest hard” rhythm of the island.

With those images of sunbathing sea lions fresh in my mind, it was time to point the RedSands camper back toward the harbor. It’s bittersweet to leave this place behind, but the adventure is far from over. I’m officially waving goodbye to Kangaroo Island and gearing up for one of the most iconic drives in the world.

Next up: It’s time to hit the Great Ocean Road. Buckle up—the next few days are going to be legendary!
