Bondi to Coogee: Sydney’s Iconic Coastal Walk
I couldn’t come to Sydney and miss out on one of the most famous stretches of coastline in the world: the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk. This 6 km track usually takes a few hours, but with views this good, you’ll definitely want to build in extra time for photo stops!
I decided to double the challenge today and walked the path in both directions, starting my journey in Coogee. It’s a suburb with a great sense of history—originally registered as a village back in 1838. I got a kick out of the fact that the local school from 1863 was eventually converted into the Coogee Bay Hotel in 1873! It’s crazy to think that an electric tram connected this beach to the city as early as 1902, turning it into a popular seaside resort long before the line was replaced by buses in the 60s.
As you wind along the cliffs and past hidden turquoise coves, the energy shifts as you approach Bondi Beach. While Bondi is a global icon today, it started as a humble suburb in 1851. It’s actually been a public playground since 1882—before that, it was privately owned, though the owners were nice enough to let the public use the sand!
Walking between these two points, you get the perfect mix of dramatic sandstone cliffs and that classic Aussie surf culture. Whether you’re a history buff or just here for the scenery, it’s a total “must-do.”
Next stop: After all that walking, I think a cold drink and some sunset views are in order!
