Sydney CBD: Heritage Shopping and Harbor Giants

For my final foray into the city center, I decided to trade the hiking trails for a bit of urban exploration. My mission? To check out the shopping scene along the famous George Street.

If you’re looking for the crown jewel of Sydney retail, the Queen Victoria Building (QVB) is it. Built between 1893 and 1898, this place is absolutely massive—30 meters wide and stretching for nearly 200 meters. Walking inside feels more like stepping into a palace than a department store. What’s really cool (and practical on a hot day) is the network of underground tunnels that connect the QVB to other major shopping hubs—a hidden subterranean world that most people don’t notice at first glance!

I also love how George Street has evolved. A huge chunk of it is now a pedestrian-only zone, so you don’t have to dodge cars while you’re window shopping—though you still have to keep an eye out for the sleek trams that glide right through the heart of the action.

To finish the day, I wandered back down to Circular Quay for one last look at the water. There was another titan of the seas moored there: the Ovation of the Seas. It’s one of the largest cruise ships on the planet, and seeing it parked right next to the Opera House really puts the scale of the harbor into perspective.

It’s been a whirlwind of history, harbor views, and high-end architecture, but I think the city has officially left its mark on me!
